Known since Roman times, the settlement was first mentioned in the Sinsheim Chronicle as early as 1090 with the name Germersheim. As a free imperial city, a chief administrative town and a garrison town, Germersheim experienced a chequered history in the centuries that followed. With the construction of the royal Bavarian fortress, whose grounds still characterise the image of the town today, Germersheim experienced a pioneering high point and upswing. On the tour through the town and fortress of Germersheim, you will explore the impressive, well-preserved military buildings, the "Germersheim underworld" with its casemates and mine passages as well as winding alleyways and romantic squares.
